America’s news media has long been known as the “Fourth Estate.” This term has come to signify the important function the media is supposed to perform in keeping government honest and responsive to the public interest. But today’s mainstream media is failing to perform that function.

City officials in Columbus, Ohio, have ended public-access TV and placed other restrictions on freedom of speech. Their actions make central Ohio look narrow-minded, smug, and even un-American.
